One of Iran’s most hideous crimes was the 1988 massacre of over 30,000 political prisoners, mostly PMOI/MEK members, and a sheer example of this regime’s crimes against humanity. Khomeini in his ruling announced any prisoner continuing to support the PMOI/MEK must be executed.
Habilian is a stark advocate of this crime, while many senior Iranian regime officials are continuing to keep a lid on their role in this regard.
In a disclosed audiotape, the late HosseinAli Montazeri, a grand ayatollah who served as Khomeini’schief deputy, noted the regime’s efforts to targetthe MEK and said that the 1988 mass killings were ‘‘thegreatest crime committed during the Islamic Republic,for which history will condemn us’’;
A bipartisan legislation registered in the U. Congress reads in part:
“…the killings were carried out on the orders of ajudge, an official from the Ministry of intelligence, and a state prosecutor, known to the prisoners as ‘‘Death Commissions’’ which undertook proceedings in a manner designed to eliminate the regime’s opponents the victims included thousands of people, including teenagers and pregnant women, imprisoned merely for participating in peaceful street protests and for possessing political reading material, many of whom had already served or were currently serving prison sentences; Whereas prisoners were executed in groups, some in mass hangings and others by firing squad, with their bodies disposed of in mass graves;”
On 5 August 2010 Habilian posted its support for the 1988 massacre by saying, “The only complaint one can raise to some extent is the mercy shown to a number of [PMOI/MEK] members, saving them from the gallows.”
